IF THE BIBLE is so darned great---why don't people JUST read IT?
by Terry inworking in a bookstore i notice the thousands and thousands of books "explaining" what the bible really "means.".
those are what people read.. when people say they read the bible they are really saying they "try".
but, it is like reading chinese.. so, what they end up doing is reading opinions.. opinions, conjectures, hypothesis, fantasy, imaginative ruminations, fanciful concoctions......other people's ideas presented as documentary fact.. .

Disfellowshipped.... a question
by liz_south inso... if there's anyone from bethel or an elder who could comment on this question i would appreciate it.
i am beyond understanding this..... my sister's daughter - (my neice - not a jw) is getting married to a young man (not a jw) in a few weeks.. her dad is df'd - so is our brother.. apparently my other sister and her "elder" husband can attend the wedding if the bride's df'd father is in attendance but not if her df'd uncle (our brother) is there.. please.... i just don't get it!!!!
there's df'd and then more df'd????

Hey Liz,
That is a major bummer that your family is being torn apart by foolish WT policies.
Let's hope something good can come out of this. Maybe you can use the obvious foolishness and warped reasonings being employed in this situation to highlight to thinking people among your friends and family who may still be trapped inside that something is horribly wrong in WT-Land.
I hope joy can break through, despite the JW influence on this wedding.
Take care.

What amount of Borg demise would you consider victory?
by Mad Sweeney inthere's always a lot of discussion about "bringing down the wts" and how it will "never happen" because they'll just keep going and going.. so here's my question.
granted that barring some major international changes of a catastrophic scifi nature the wts is going to exist in some shape or form for the next hundred years and probably more, what progress on the "apostate" front would you personally consider a success?.
would you simply be happy to have all of your blood relatives out?.

Many good points here.
Another thought that I don't think has been mentioned yet: is it would be nice to get to the point where the truth about "the truth" is covered in high school curriculem in a history class. It would make a great case study on corruption in modern religion and how millions of people can be fooled.
That would be a nice victory, I believe, but like leavingWT said the JWs are just a fart in the wind in the big picture of history.

While I was having my awakening I decided to read the bible cover to cover, and tried to do so - not through the eyes of a JW, not even through the eyes of a Christian - but just through the eyes of an honest human, with no preconceived opinions.
As I read through it, there were many times I was horrified. At other times I laughed. At yet again, at other times I was forced to pause and marvel at the wisdom of the sayings. And then I would read something that showed an incredible lack of wisdom, and to be completely void of modern common sense.
In the end, when I put the bible down, I thought to myself - that was an interesting collection of very old writings.
It was cool to be able to read what others had written thousands of years ago. It was fascinating to see the world through their eyes at those different points in time. It was revealing to see how man's perception of justice, and ultimate fairness has changed over the years. Despite a world that is not without cases of great injustices and immorality, I could clearly see how man has evolved in his morality since the days that the bible was written. I could clearly see this, even from within the pages of the bible itself, as over a thousand years ticked forward from the writings of the OT to the writings of the NT. Man's sense of right and wrong was improving.
From the days of it being socially acceptable to be able to stone your own children, and from the glorious days of the establishment of that winning concept of the Cities of Refuge, the human race has come a long way, baby. These primitive forms of justice and morality, are just that - primitive. Primitive and inferior to what we know and accept as proper and right today.
What must we conclude for this undeniable truism?
You will of course draw your own conclusions, but I can tell you what I concluded.
I concluded that the standards I was reading about in the bible, unequivocally did not come from God. (Unless of course God is a moron, but if he exists I find that to be highly unlikely.) Therfore what we conclude is that the bible was written by men, period. Some writers were smarter and more ethically and morally advanced than others, but they all had their flaws. As is the case with most works of ancient literature, there is certainly some value in reading them to educate yourself on the ways and understandings of the past. However, do not let these old words rule your life. Do not let it guide your thinking without ever questioning its validity. Sadly, too many people over the years have done just that - and with disastrous results for the human family.
But as for me and my household, we will chose modern common sense and dignity, over the ancient blatherings of nonsensical primitive morality mixed in with the occasional decent message as found in the bible. We will choose science, and unbiased observation over entrenched unchangeable opinions of religion. We will choose honesty over lies, and will choose understanding over mythology. We choose Moving On, not Looking Back. We choose peace and contentment, not bitterness and anger. What is done is done. So we were fooled for a while by the JWs and by religion in general. So, what? That's the way it goes sometimes. We learn from our experience while in it, and try and be better people based on what we have learned.
The foolishness, and all the pain and suffering and ignorance that comes with it - ends with the generation of my children. A long line of JWs dating back to the days of Pastor Russell comes to a screeching halt. My family will no longer be taught any mind numbing JW dogma. Nor will they be taught the ways of any organized religion. They will be taught all the values that my wife and I feel are proper and right. We are no longer puppets. We are free. We are happy.
Now I'm off to give my beautiful family all a warm and loving hug.
I will then make them breakfast, and we will enjoy a wonderful morning together doing something worthwhile and fulfilling.
And no, we won't be wasting any precious time knocking on doors with a canned presentation that could lead an innocent human in to a lifetime of servitude to the Watchtower corporation....
Peace to all!

I think exposing the WTs lawsuit threat is fantastic.
If any JWs stumble upon this information it will surely give them for pause for thought. The approach the WT is taking reveals a startling truth about their real intentions. They don't want the "good news" spread or published by all - they want to be in complete control.
It has always been about control for the WT, since the days of everyone's favorite alcoholic, Judge Rutherford.

Bible says God confused peoples languages at Babel....is this childish nonsense?
by Witness 007 inyeah so in genesis we read how people began building a tower which would reach up to jehovah in heaven....must have been damn tall....rather then just stop them, god changes everyones language.....one guys speakin french.....another speakin russian and so on!
can't finish the tower now can they!!
this is not very scientific......does anyone believe this is how languages got started???
-
The Oracle
Answer: Yes, it is Childish nonsense.
Try telling this story to a group of educated people, and then tell them that you believe this is how all the languages got started.
Can you say... INSANE?

Great work Aunt Bee,
It was good of you to take the time to plant those seeds of real truth. Perhaps the other quiet lady was taking it all in.
This is how you free a mind.
GREAT JOB!
